This Monte Cristo sandwich is my absolute favorite thing to order at Disneyland! Every time we go to Disneyland we make reservations at Cafe Orleans and order the Monte Cristo and the Pomme Frites (which are also available at the Blue Bayou). They have shared their official recipe and it is divine!

As far back as the 1930s, people have enjoyed the French croque-monsieu or French Sandwich which refers to a fried or grilled ham and cheese sandwich. No matter what you call it, this sandwich will quickly become a favorite.
Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
The Monte Cristo sandwich gained popularity thanks to Disney who has had this sandwich on its menu for over 50 years. You can enjoy it at the Blue Bayou and Cafe Orleans in Disneyland. They finally released their official recipe for their version of this sandwich so that people could make it at home.
While it is slightly different than the traditional French Sandwich, it's quickly become a favorite which is why I'm sharing it today.
What's the difference between a Monte Cristo and a croque-monsieu?
The Disney version of the Monte Cristo Sandwich is, of course, fried. And, it contains both ham and turkey rather than simply ham. Traditionally, a Monte Cristo is deep-fried rather than simply fried. And, while the traditional French version contains a French cheese like Gouda or Gruyere, the Disney version contains Swiss cheese.
What is the best bread for a Monte Cristo?
That really depends on who you talk to. You can make this sandwich recipe with any type of bread you like. Disney traditionally uses white bread for their version. A few visits ago I talked to the chef and was told that they use sliced Hawaiian bread and it makes a world of difference in my opinion.
But, for the French version, you would use thick slices of brioche.
But, for the French version, you would use thick slices of brioche.
If you cannot find that, look for a thick-sliced style of sandwich bread rather than thin. You want something that is thick enough to stand up to deep frying. A challah style bread will work as well.
What type of ham should I use?
Any type of ham will work with this Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe, but traditionally baked or boiled ham was most commonly used in this sandwich. We have many more options available now, so feel free to experiment with the type you have at home. And, if you don't have Swiss cheese on hand, create it with whatever type of sliced cheese you have.
Ingredients for a Monte Cristo
You will need these ingredients to make your own sandwich.- egg
- water
- all-purpose flour
- salt
- baking powder
- egg bread - try sliced Hawaiian bread
- ham
- turkey
- Swiss cheese or Gruyere
- canola oil for frying
- Confectioners sugar
- Blackberry preserves
How to Make a Monte Cristo
To make this sandwich, you make a batter of the egg, water, flour, salt, and baking powder. Then, you prepare your sandwiches with bread, ham, turkey, and cheese. Then, cut your sandwich in quarters. Heat the oil on the stove. Cover the sandwich, front and back, with the batter. And, cook each side until golden brown.
Don't cook more than one sandwich at a time or you will lower the temperature of the oil. This will make your sandwiches heavy and greasy.
Remove the sandwich to dry on paper towels. Then, sprinkle the warm sandwich with confectioners sugar. And, serve it with a small bowl of blackberry preserves to dip it in.
It's traditional to serve this Monte Cristo sandwich with jam.
If you would prefer to bake your Monte Cristo instead of frying it, you can bake it at 450F for 5 minutes per side.
What to serve with Monte Cristo sandwiches
If you're wondering what you should serve with your sandwich besides the jam or preserves, you have several options. You can serve a handful of grapes or fresh strawberries. Or, you can serve it with potato chips. Why not try it with a bowl of fruit salad?
How can I store leftovers?
A Monte Cristo sandwich is best served warm. You want the cheese to be all melty when you bite into it. But, if you happen to have some leftover, you can store it in the refrigerator wrapped in aluminum foil for two days.
To reheat it again, remove it from the foil and reheat it on a cookie sheet in the oven.
